SDV development that connects software across the vehicle and beyond

Software-Defined Vehicle Engineering

Evolving from hardware-led to software-defined vehicles with AI-driven engineering excellence

Software-defined vehicle (SDV) engineering involves designing, developing, integrating, and validating the software systems that control vehicle functions and connect the vehicle to digital services. It brings together embedded software, middleware, applications, cybersecurity, and update capabilities so manufacturers can develop vehicle features across platforms and improve them throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

Intellias supports OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, semiconductor companies, and mobility technology providers from SDV architecture and proof of concept through start of production (SOP) and post-production evolution. We connect low-level embedded engineering with AUTOSAR architecture, middleware, in-vehicle applications, cloud services, and continuous validation, helping clients deliver production-ready SDV systems while retaining flexibility across silicon, operating systems, and platforms.

Software-defined vehicle development FAQ

A software-defined vehicle is designed so that many functions, services, and user experiences are implemented and evolved primarily through software. Compared with a traditional ECU-centric vehicle, an SDV typically uses more centralized computing, service-oriented communication, hardware abstraction, vehicle-cloud connectivity, and continuous software delivery. Hardware remains essential, but software can change more independently throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

Intellias works across zonal and centralized E/E architecture, embedded and base software, operating systems, AUTOSAR, middleware, digital cockpit and ADAS applications, navigation, connectivity, cloud platforms, OTA/FOTA, data engineering, DevOps, testing, functional safety, and cybersecurity. Clients can engage with us for SDV consulting on one specific layer or cross-layer integration.

ISO 26262 for functional safety (including ASIL B and above delivery experience), ISO/SAE 21434 for automotive cybersecurity, Automotive SPICE for engineering process (CL2), and support for UNECE R155 and R156 obligations covering cybersecurity management and software update management. Production-representative validation runs in the Intellias Engineering Garage, assessed at TISAX Assessment Level 3.

Intellias is not tied to a silicon vendor, operating system, hypervisor, or SDV platform. We work across AUTOSAR Classic and Adaptive, RTOS, Linux, QNX, Android Automotive OS, and Green Hills, on the compute platforms the client has already selected, and we integrate alongside existing Tier 1 and software suppliers rather than displacing them. Where a client has no incumbent stack, we help evaluate options against program requirements instead of defaulting to a product we sell.

Traditional automotive software is developed per ECU, frozen at start of production, and changed only through hardware revisions or workshop updates. SDV development decouples software from hardware: functions are built as services on centralized or zonal compute, delivered continuously through OTA, and evolved across the vehicle lifecycle. The practical consequences are architectural (service-oriented interfaces, hardware abstraction, virtualization), organisational (continuous integration and release governance instead of one-shot delivery), and regulatory (UNECE R155/R156 obligations for update and cybersecurity management).

Scope determines duration. A focused engagement, a zonal architecture concept, a BSP bring-up on a new SoC, or a validation framework, typically runs three to nine months. A production SDV platform program spanning architecture, base software, applications, cloud, and validation to SOP runs across multiple years and vehicle lines. Intellias works both ways: single-layer teams that plug into a client’s existing program, and cross-layer ownership where we take responsibility for an integrated platform stream.

AI can augment requirements analysis, architecture change-impact work, code generation, test design, visual HMI validation, bug triage, compliance checks, and reporting. Intellias uses human-controlled, toolchain-integrated workflows and can keep the approach cloud- and model-agnostic. AI-enabled vehicle features are engineered with explicit attention to data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, validation, and deterministic fallback behavior.

Intellias provides complete zonal E/E architecture design. This can include target-topology definition, functional allocation, ECU consolidation, high-performance compute and zonal gateway design, communication and data-flow planning, virtualization and isolation, safety and cyber concepts, and integration with diagnostics, OTA, cloud, and vehicle data services. We also help plan staged migration of software defined vehicle solutions from distributed or domain-based environments.

Validation can span requirements traceability, unit and integration testing, MIL/SIL/HIL, virtual ECUs, data replay, fault injection, performance and resource analysis, HMI visual testing, and qualification evidence. Production-representative work can use physical ECUs, test benches, HIL environments, and pre-series vehicles in the Engineering Garage at TISAX Assessment Level 3.

Safety and cybersecurity are coordinated from architecture through verification. Intellias supports HARA and TARA activities, secure boot and secure update, workload isolation, cryptographic controls, gateway protection, vulnerability and penetration testing, ISO 26262- and ISO/SAE 21434-aligned engineering, Automotive SPICE-aligned processes, and support for UNECE R155/R156 obligations. The exact assurance scope is tailored to the system and the client’s homologation responsibilities.
