At this year’s Overture Member Summit, Roman Kropyvnytskyi, Delivery Manager at Intellias, had the opportunity to share his experience regarding a key strategic vector – educating the next generation of mapping specialists. Overture Maps is a platform that serves as a foundation for innovation in modern cartography. Being a member of the Overture Maps Foundation, Intellias is developing this ecosystem for apparent reason: open source and unification provide the bedrock upon which new, high-tech solutions can grow, accessible to a wider circle of developers.

However, for the industry to achieve sustainable growth, it is not enough to simply use the standard; companies must prepare engineers who can fluently navigate its schema and push its boundaries. This is why Intellias decided to integrate Overture into its educational programs, betting on the specialists who will soon define the industry’s direction. When knowledge becomes widespread, the industry gains the momentum needed to create more complex and valuable services.

The centerpiece of Intellias young talent education strategy is InteliMapLab, operating as an External Juniors Program. This is far more than a classic training course; it is a full-scale simulation of the software development lifecycle. Students are organized into Agile teams under the guidance of experienced Intellias mentors. This approach allows them to experience the dynamics of a real project before they ever step into their first commercial role.

The course, which spans from two and a half to four and a half months, is purely practical and uses realistic projects in the mapping area as a base for education. This creates an environment that closely mirrors industrial development, where every line of code is audited for quality and compliance with standards.

InteliMapLab is more than a training initiative. It is a practical environment where future mapping engineers learn how to work with real standards and data, as well as solve practical engineering challenges. Programs like this help build a stronger pipeline of talent for the industry while also growing a wider community of map experts who can contribute to the evolution and adoption of Overture Maps.

Today, the IntelliMapLab program spans Ukraine, Poland, and India, demonstrating consistently high efficiency: over 85% of participants successfully complete their training. A logical outcome of this synergy was the suite of technical solutions developed by student teams in 2025. They focused on bridging the gap between raw data and its practical application in real-world projects:

Adapting GraphHopper for Overture

To make GpahpHopper data-source agnostic, Data Access Layer was introduced. Also, we developed Data Reader with loads of data and split Overture Road data into simpler sub-segments, dividing features at each connector point and at each change of a scope-based property. As a result, the ecosystem gained a routing engine that is based on Overture data increasing its adoption in navigation solutions.

Map Statistic Framework

Having big experience in delivering maps, we see map statistics are crucial for data validation, regression tracking, and anomalies detection. That is why we created Map Statistic Framework for Overture. It loads data, converts it into an internal model, then indexes and visualizes it into interactive dashboards. This framework can be adjusted: developers can modify basic dashboards and create new ones as per their needs.
